With so much going on in the world at the moment it can feel very intense and you may feel overwhelmed by it all.
You are not alone, many people feel this way because we often feel powerless to do anything about what we see in the news and on social media which increases our stress and anxiety levels.
Here are some tips to reduce your anxiety and stress levels if you are feeling overwhelmed by the constant news and social media cycles.
Limit yourself to the amount of news you watch on the TV and switch to another Channel if it feels too much.
Limit your exposure to the news and social media on your phone or tablet. You can do this by setting yourself set times each day that you will check your news and social media feeds. Even if you check these 3 times a day 10 minutes at a time that’s still 30 minutes of exposure! - but limiting the time you normally spend will help with information overload.
Switch off any alerts on your phone that will make you want to grab your phone and check the alerts as they come in.
Move your news channel and social media apps off the front screen on your phone to the next screen then you won’t be tempted to keep checking your phone all the time.
Take care of yourself by going for a walk, reading a book, keep up with your hobbies and interests or see friends and family. Anything that feels nurturing and relaxing will help to build your resilience levels. Meditation is a great way to reduce anxiety and stress.
Try to accept that you have little control over what is happening in the world and in the media but you can reduce your exposure to it.
Focus on being true to your own values and by helping those around you or in your community.
Check in with family and friends if you or they are struggling, it will help you to feel more connected.
Above all be kind to yourself you are only human and it’s understandable that you are feeling overwhelmed with what is going on in the world at the moment.
Limiting your exposure to the news and social media doesn’t mean you aren’t worried or that you don’t care it just means you are taking steps to take care of yourself and your mental wellbeing.
